When Katie and Chris approached me about shooting their wedding, I knew straight away we were going to get along. They found me via my bucket list blog post so it was really great to hear they are getting married at the absolutely amazing Avoncroft Living Museum. As I hadn’t visited before, and because they love the place so much, they decided to have their engagement shoot at Avoncroft as well. It was so much fun! Katie and Chris told me that they want their wedding, and their photos, to be joyful and colourful and relaxed. So I loved that they turned up looking exactly those things! Katie was dressed in an awesome orange and purple outfit – one thing I love about shoots where the weather is a bit unpredictable (which is most shoots in the UK to be fair), is that it gives couples some variety as they can layer their outfits.
Abelard the long-legged pug
You may notice from the photos the presence of a third attendee of the shoot. When we met for our consultation, I was lucky enough to meet the lovely Abelard, the most delightful little pug. He’s part of the family so of course he also came to the shoot for a bit, and seemed to enjoy sniffing and pottering about. This charming little guy stole the show and my heart! Such a little cutie, and I love that his name is a bit of a nerdy reference.
Avoncroft Museum buildings
for anyone unfamiliar with Avoncroft, looking at these photos you might wonder what on Earth it is. It’s such a hidden gem and has a ton of quirky and interesting buildings. There’s an abundance of colour, texture, shapes and light which is a photographers dream come true. I love that everywhere you look there’s something different – we were even treated to a potted history of the iconic red phone box while we waited for the rain to pass, and then had some fun mucking about on the phones. We had the place almost to ourselves which was fab, so we were able to use lots of the unique architecture for the shoot. There’s also plenty of nature around due to the setting of the museum, which means you can basically have it all. Oh and the gift shop sells some pretty decent locally brewed beers and ciders, just saying 😉
Spring blossoms and April showers
So, as is typical in the UK, we got served all kinds of weather on the shoot. We had showers, lovely sunshine, fluffy clouds and slightly angry looking skies. I actually don’t mind when it’s like that, as again it’s more variety. Thankfully we didn’t get a soaking! And although everything seems to have been a bit late this year, we even got a few blossoms making an appearance which was lovely. When the blossoms pop out in full force is my favourite time of year, it’s so romantic and feels like confetti everywhere you go. So even when there’s only a little bit, I’ll be out shooting in it! Rain showers can be really romantic and lovely too, we even got to shoot a fun reflection of the iconic green chapel building.
We saved some of the really special buildings for the wedding day, so there will be more to come in a few months once these two have said ‘I do’. If you fancy having an engagement shoot at Avoncroft, get in touch! Katie and Chris (and Abelard!) I’ll see you very soon for the wedding, can’t wait!
